We should remember that the ancient yogis and many other cultures knew how to use the sun to heal all kinds of illnesses, and bring about radiant health. Dr Chiranjiv Chhabra, leading dermatologist, Skin Alive Clinic explains, “We live in a modern world with hyped messages about how dangerous the sun is. According to National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), Vitamin D deficiency prevails in epidemic proportions all over the Indian subcontinent, with a prevalence of 70%–100% in the general population. But if these reports are entirely true, why are Indians heavily deficient in Vitamin D – the vitamin that is photosynthesized in the skin on exposure to UVB rays? Not to forget, our nation has plentiful sunshine all through the year. Sun is today one of the most delusional stars for earthlings, what with reports of sun exposure putting you at cancer risk surfacing time and again. Once inside the office, you safely remove the sun safety gear before comfortably settling in your seat, away from the richest and the only source of Vitamin D in your body. You step out of your house smothered in sun screen (stronger SPF, the better), wear sunglasses and wrap yourself in a scarf to escape ‘harsh’ rays of sun.
